外卦是坎，先天五行中属水。内卦是震，后天五行中属阳木。
“屯”这个卦名很妙，
屯本身是个会意字，象草木初生的样子；
草木初生，破土而出，新芽始发，非常艰难；

树木不宜于行。所以说，勿用有攸往。
攸，会意字，本义是“水流的样子”；
“勿用有攸往”的意思就是，不要随大流的跟风做事；
宜深深扎根。所以说，利建侯。
侯，象形字，本义是“箭靶”；
“利建侯”的意思是，最好先找到目标，有的放矢，或者引申下，没目标的话，呆着老老实实工作，建功立业。

大地万物生发，初生十分艰难，就像在坚硬的山石之上（打洞）立表柱一般。需要找正位置，预先确定好目标，这样才能“事半功倍”。所以说，磐桓。利居贞。利建侯。
这是万物生发的基础。
这一爻说的是，提前确立目标，坚定意志。

屯，艰难；
邅，转、改变方向的样子。这里指频繁改变，进进退退的样子；
乘，四匹马拉的车子叫一“乘”；
班，本义是分割玉，这里有分开，离群的意思；
寇，竞争、侵略的意思；
媾，交互为婚姻，亲上结亲的意思；
字，古代女子出嫁，于本名之外再起一“字”，方便家里人称呼。女子许嫁的意思。
白手起家，发展的状况时好时坏，艰难的样子，就像拉车的马行动不那么一致，难以顺利的前进。开始阶段，没有经验，决策和实行都需要有修正的过程，还要保持团结一心，不被困难打倒。所以说，屯如邅如，乘马班如；
这种情况下，很容易动摇，失去前进（侵占为寇）的动力，于是转而找其他的资源合作（婚媾）。这就把主导的地位交了出去。这样，将来的发展就不再受自己控制了。也许很久以后才能实现自己的发展规划。所以说，匪寇，婚媾。女子贞不字，十年乃字。
这一爻说的是，陷入困境，也许只能曲线救国了。

就像在没有向导的情况下外出猎鹿，只身进入山林。几乎打到了鹿，但每次都被逃脱，逐渐深入山林。再坚持深入的话就会迷失自己（还不一定能打到鹿）。这个时候，不如直接放弃这个目标。所以说，即鹿无虞，惟入于林。君子几，不如舍。往，吝。
这一爻说的是，量力而为，学会放弃。

因为新，所以具有无穷潜力。这时候再去寻求合作，各取所需，一派双赢局面。坚持下去，就是好的。所以说，乘马班如，求婚媾。往吉，无不利。
这一爻说的是，目标明确如一，各取所需。

九五。屯其膏。小贞吉，大贞凶

膏，肥美的样子。
起步阶段，还是以积累资源，积聚力量为主。现有力量足以完成一些小的目标，但还不足以去实现大的目标。硬要完成力不能及的事情，结果往往适得其反，把自己推入凶险的境地。所以说，屯其膏。小贞吉，大贞凶。
这一爻说的是，分清主次，量力而为，不可因小失大。

上六。乘马班如，泣血涟如

泣血，无声痛哭、泪如血涌的样子；
涟，泪流不断的样子。
草木生发到达尽头，必须寻求转变，但新的发展方向太多，难以取舍。意见不统一，就像拉车的马行动不那么一致，进退两难。于是无声痛哭，各奔东西，追寻各自的理想。所以说，乘马班如，泣血涟如。
这一爻说的是，穷则思变，早作决断。
