Yao

Yao of Hexagrams

The I Ching, or Book of Changes, consists of 64 hexagrams. The hexagrams of the I Ching consist of six lines or "yao", each with a specific line statement.

It is said that the hexagram names and statements were written by King Wen of Zhou, and the line statements were added later by his son, the Duke of Zhou. The Duke of Zhou added the line statements as an educational tool for the young King Cheng of Zhou.

Therefore, the line statements often use metaphorical and narrative forms to describe the patterns of development and also introduce the changes in the lines of the hexagrams.

While the hexagram names and explanations are considered to be more static, the line statements are seen as more dynamic and provide insight into the potential evolution of a situation. The I Ching's predictions are based on these patterns of development.

  • 初爻描述从上一(任意)卦变到本我。对应的主体对环境、资源关系控制和策略。为整个卦事定下行动基调,作为指导;

  • 二爻描述卦体中的本我,对应自我状态的调整。类似于内部环境的基础建设。内部已经完善(再无发展可能),准备和外部交互;

  • 三爻描述卦体中本我和外部的交互。讨论主体和外部竞争对手的关系和策略;

  • 四爻描述卦体中外部环境和本我的交互。已经受到外部认可,站在外部合作者的角度,对主体状态做出中肯的评价。讨论主体应当采取的策略;

  • 五爻描述整个卦体的形态,本我已经和外部环境融为一体。讨论主体作为主导者在外部环境中的状态和对应策略;

The relationship between the six lines of the hexagram is as follows:

  • The first line describes the change from the previous (any) hexagram to the current one. It corresponds to the subject's control of the relationship between the environment and resources and strategies. It sets the tone for the entire hexagram as a guide;

  • The second line describes the self within the hexagram, corresponding to the adjustment of the self-state. It is similar to building the foundation of the internal environment. The internal has been perfected (no further development is possible) and is ready for interaction with the external;

  • The third line describes the interaction between the self and the external within the hexagram. It discusses the relationship and strategies between the subject and external competitors;

  • The fourth line describes the interaction between the external environment and the self within the hexagram. It has been recognized by the external, standing from the perspective of external collaborators, and makes a fair evaluation of the subject's state. It discusses the strategies that the subject should adopt;

  • The fifth line describes the overall form of the hexagram, with the self having been integrated with the external environment. It discusses the subject's state and corresponding strategies as a leader in the external environment;

  • Throughout the journey, the subject has reached the limit of what the external environment can accommodate. When facing limitations, the subject will think of change and transition from the current hexagram state to the next (any) hexagram. It references the hexagram principle without being constrained by the hexagram image, and after the subject's development reaches its limit, it makes a choice among various changes and explains the corresponding strategy.

  • 主体,自己、自己的(事业、财物、天赋、外形、家族……);

In terms of personal development, the explanation of the line statements can be applied to various aspects, from the management of a country to the small matters of a household.

To facilitate understanding, some modifications have been made to the wording used to explain the line statements,

  • separating the subject ( oneself, one's career, property, talents, appearance, family, etc.)

  • from the external environment (resources, competitors, favorable and unfavorable conditions).

The line statements may have taken into account the yin and yang changes between the lines and the corresponding relationships between the lines, but there is no clear evidence to prove that there is a necessary relationship between them.
