  1. 周易上经 - I Ching Part I

山水蒙 - Mountain-Water Enlighten

外卦是艮,先天五行中属阴土。内卦是坎,后天五行中属水。

和“蹇”卦理一体两面。

引水入田,让草木生发。茂盛的样子。

  • 蒙,“草木蒙茂”的意思。


The external trigram is Gen, belonging to the Yin Earth in the Primordial Trigrams. The internal trigram is Kan, belonging to the Water in the Derived Trigrams.

It is integrated with the principle of "Move hardly".

Leading water into the fields, allowing vegetation to thrive. A prosperous appearance.

亨。匪我求童蒙,童蒙求我。初筮,告。再三渎,渎则不告。利、贞

Consistency. Not I beg for enlightenment, but enlightenment shall count on me. When divining or asking, tell them. If irragate for a third time, it is too much, keep them away. Keep sharpness and quickness, and being upright and adhering to the right path.

  • 光秃秃的泥土上草木生发。不是因为草木生发水才进入,而是因为水流入泥土才让草木生发。

    • 童,山岭、田地无草木的样子。

  • 水不能多,水太多就草木死烂,田土泥泞了。所以说,初筮,告。再三渎,渎则不告。

    • 渎,开沟渠而灌溉田地。


  • Vegetation thrives on the barren soil. This is not because the vegetation attracts water, but because the water flows into the soil, allowing the vegetation to thrive. Therefore, consistency. Not I beg for enlightenment, but enlightenment shall count on me.

  • Water should not be excessive, as too much water will cause the vegetation to die and the soil to become muddy. Therefore, when divining or asking, tell them. If irragate for a third time, it is too much, keep them away. Keep sharpness and quickness, and being upright and adhering to the right path.

爻辞 - Line Commentary

初六。发蒙,利用刑人,用说桎梏。以往,吝

Enlightening, using punishment, in order not to be restrained. Keep on, it is overly frugal and may cause difficulties.

  • 蒙,这里有蒙昧的意思,引申为那些“蒙昧”的人们,需要我来“启蒙”的人;

  • 刑,刑罚的意思。做动词,这里有以刑罚来警告、喝止、纠正的意思;

  • 说,通“脱”。

万物生发,推而广之,于是才能“草木蒙茂”。站住脚,进一步吸收同行,引导市场进入良性循环。建立在自己经验的基础上,使用“刑罚”为工具来警告、约束那些蒙昧的人,能起到事半功倍的效果。而真正的目的,是为了让那些人不做错事,少走弯路(免受“刑罚”刑拘)。所以说,发蒙,利用刑人,用说桎梏。

但是要记住,“刑罚”只是手段,不是目的,长期的压制会引来反抗,反而造成艰难的局面。所以说,以往,吝。

这一爻说的是,以刑罚为手段,不走极端。


The growth of all things expands and broadens, thus allowing for "vegetation to flourish". By standing firm and absorbing like-minded individuals, the market can enter a virtuous cycle. Based on one's own experience, using "punishment" as a tool to warn and restrain those who are ignorant, can achieve twice the result with half the effort. The ultimate goal is to prevent those individuals from making mistakes and avoid taking the wrong path (to avoid being punished). So, enlightening, using punishment, in order not to be restrained.

However, it must be remembered that punishment is just a means, not the end goal. Long-term suppression will lead to resistance and create difficult situations. So, keep on, it is overly frugal and may cause difficulties.

This line means to use punishment as a means, not to take extreme measures.

九二。包蒙,吉。纳妇,吉。子克家

Embracing ignorance brings good luck. Taking a wife brings good luck and the son is able to overcome the family.

  • 妇,儿媳;

  • 克,本义“胜任”。

在启蒙的过程中,因为各人素质不同,接受有快慢,需要有一颗包容(蒙昧)的心,这样才能得到好的结果。所以说,包蒙,吉;

明确目的,包容蒙昧是为了让蒙昧的人学习知识,将来帮助自己,甚至解放自己,接自己的班。就像新媳妇过门。标志着孩子已经成人,可以成家立业了。好啊!所以说,纳妇,吉。子克家。

这一爻说的是,孺子可教!


In the process of enlightenment, because people have different qualities, there are different speeds in accepting knowledge. Therefore, it is necessary to have a tolerant (ignorant) heart in order to achieve good results. So, embracing ignorance brings good luck.

The goal is to be clear, and to embrace ignorance in order to let ignorant people learn knowledge and help themselves in the future, even to liberate themselves and take over their own class.It is like a new daughter-in-law coming to the door, marking that the child has become an adult and can establish a family and a career. Great! So, taking a wife brings good luck and the son is able to overcome the family.

This line says that a son can thus be taught.

六三。勿用取女:见金夫,不有躬。无攸利

Don't marry a woman who is easily swayed by wealth, as there will be no personal gain.

  • 躬,整个身体。

启蒙过程,需要考察各人心性,应该选择能够信念坚定,有自己主张的人。举个例子,不能娶这样的女人:看到有钱有势的男人,就不能控制自己(见异思迁)。娶这样的女人没有任何好处。所以说,勿用取女:见金夫,不有躬。无攸利。

这一爻说的是,不要见异思迁,为色所蒙。


In the process of enlightenment, one should examine people's dispositions and choose those who are steadfast in their beliefs and have their own opinions. For example, one should not marry a woman who cannot control herself when she sees a wealthy and powerful man (changes her mind easily), as this woman brings no benefits. So, don't marry a woman who is easily swayed by wealth, as there will be no personal gain.

This line says that do not be swayed by strange thoughts or deceived by appearances.

六四。困蒙,吝

Ignorance is a hindrance and leads to difficulties.

  • 困,围困、束缚。困蒙,受困于蒙昧不得发蒙,蒙昧者依然蒙昧。

大众都处于蒙昧之中,无法可想。无知,后果也不可预料。所以说,困蒙,吝。

这一爻说的是,无知是最大的困境。


Everyone is in a state of ignorance and unable to fathom, with unpredictable consequences. So, ignorance is a hindrance and leads to difficulties.

This line says that ignorance is the greatest predicament.

六五。童蒙,吉

Being open-minded and receptive to new knowledge is a good thing and brings good fortune.

就像为荒山发蒙。童山上草木蒙茂。欣欣向荣,好啊!所以说,童蒙,吉。

这一爻说的是,虚心好学,必有所得。


Just like how enlightenment can be brought to a barren mountain, and the plants and trees will flourish. So, being open-minded and receptive to new knowledge is a good thing and brings good fortune.

This line says that when you're humble and eager to learn, you'll surely gain knowledge and succeed.

上九。击蒙。不利为寇,利御寇

Defeating ignorance is not advantageous for invasion, but advantageous for repelling invasion.

彻底去除了蒙昧(将蒙昧击倒)。可以考虑下一步的发展计划,能力还不足以主动侵占新的资源、市场,但足够保护已有的事业了。所以说,击蒙。不利为寇,利御寇。

这一爻说的是,开蒙已毕,不可急功冒进。


Completely eliminating ignorance (defeating ignorance) means it's time to consider future development plans, while current abilities may not be enough to actively seize new resources or markets, but it's enough to protect existing businesses. So, defeating ignorance is not advantageous for invasion, but advantageous for repelling invasion.

This line says that enlightenment has been achieved, and one should not rush for immediate success.

开蒙已毕,先巩固自己,做好抵御外来侵扰的准备。


The enlightenment process is completed and it's time to consolidate and prepare to resist external invasion.
